In this seminar the predicting capabilities of the in house developed solver SPARC applying LES and DES for a number of flow fields will be presented. The solver uses a block structured Finite Volume scheme to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with central differences up to 4th order accuracy. Classical subgrid scale models like fixed coefficient and dynamic Smagorinsky models and Monotonically Integrated LES (MILES) and a newly proposed High-passed filtered Eddy viscosity model have been used and compared.
The investigated flows include external flows around cars (Ahmed body and ASMO) and propellers as well as internal flows of turbine blades (VKI blade) and internal combustion engines.
It will be shown that accurate predictions of the above mentioned test cases has been calculated provided that the vortical regions are sufficiently resolved ( up to 70 million points) and that accurate and non-reflecting boundary conditions have been used.
