Prof. M. Li (李默) received his B. S. in materias science from the Central-South University, China in 1982, Ph.D. in applied physics in 1994 from California Institute of Technology. From 1998 to 2001, he was an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University. Currently he is a professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Prof. Li’s research focuses on understanding fundamental properties and processes of materials, and predicting material behaviors. His current research focuses on the following areas: (a) phase transformations; (b) mechanical properties of materials; (c) statistical mechanics of non-equilibrium process and transformations in materials. Currently, he has the on-going research projects on nanoscale materials, metallic glasses, equilibrium and metastable liquid, porous and granular matters and irradiation effects on materials. In these research works, he got many interesting and important results. He has published many nice papers in famous magazine.

Abstract
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Glasses: A Multiscale Approach

Abstract
Unlike crystalline materials, metallic glasses are characterized by the lack of the long-range translational symmetry, which leads to fundamental difficulties in understanding the mechanical properties in this new class of materials. In this talk, I will show our recent research efforts in uncovering the atomistic mechanisms of the deformation process in the metallic glasses using multiscale approach. I will also show how we employ the atomic mechanisms and the mesoscopic models to extract the microscopic mechanisms of deformation and use this information to build continuum models, which are expected to play an important rule in design and application of metallic glasses.
