In HDD industry, a nanometer-thick PFPE polymer layer is coated on the media surface to reduce the possible friction and wear during drive operation. In this presentation, a few topics closely related to PFPE performance are discussed.
 
First, the thermal stability of PFPE polymers is investigated and it is found that molecular weight and end-groups are critical. Second, the polymer coating technology is explored and the mechanism of polymer formation on the media substrate during coating process has been proposed based on experimental results. Third, the nature of the interaction between PFPE polymers and the substrate is studied based on LW-AB theory. The results suggest that the substrate serves as Lewis base while the PFPE polymers serve as Lewis acid. Last, but not least, the conformation of the PFPE thin films has been “measured” by correlating the monolayer thickness to the molecular weight. Surprisingly, the results show that the conformation of the thin film is close to bulk.
