  简介:
The cerebral cortex is characterized by collections of 200-500 um sized modules that can be visualized with anatomical, functional, and imaging methodologies. Using optical imaging in Macaque monkey V1 and V2, we have characterized the organization of modules underlying processing of lower and higher order aspects of visual features, such as contours, brightness and color, disparity, and motion. Our data suggest that understanding the modular organization of a cortical area provides insight into the computational goals of that area. We have extended this approach to visual area V4 in the Macaque monkey, an area believed to play an important role in visual attention but whose functional organization is poorly understood. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging in V4 of the alert macaque monkey performing a fixation task, we have examined the organization of response to orientation, color, luminance and binocular disparity. Within foveal V4, we find evidence for a systematic but complex topographic organization and the presence of multiple, interdigitating featural maps, including maps for color, luminance, orientation, and disparity. Experiments examining effects of visual attention on these domains are ongoing.
