Abstract:
I proposed Autonomous Decentralized System (ADS) as information technology in 1977 and so far the strategic research and development (R&D) on the ADS has been pursued from concept to implementation for 31 years.
The concept of the ADS is established on the analogy with the molecular biology in the sense that totality of a living thing as a body cannot be specified but partiality as a cell can be. Due to the characteristic of cell’s autonomy, system can be defined by integration of autonomous subsystems. By changing the underlying concept, almost all technologies can be created not only technologies themselves but also system architecture, value and design. And that is how I was able to register 350 patents in the world. These technologies have been expanded in computer, communication and control fields, and they have been successfully applied in manufacturing, logistics, transportation and service systems. Examples include the world-wide largest control and information systems by Japanese railways for train operation serving 16 million passengers/day and for e-commerce by using the IC-cards with the ability of processing 30 million transactions/day. These ADS technologies have been sustaining even under the evolving societies, markets and infrastructures through the strategic R&D.
Such a long and worldwide R&D can be achieved by my confident strategy of 三 発 which means発想、発展 and発信, or 3 C, that is, Creativity, Consistency and Contribution.
The first 発 is 発想: Creativity. The origin of the idea lies not in the same technology area but behind the different areas such as biology.
The second 発 is 発展 : Consistency. My activities of R&D cover concept creation, technologies invention, experiment&evaluation, and development&implementation. These activities have been performed in the strategic and consistent manner such as to clarify social and economic background (why), to define objectives and requirements (what), to prioritize technologies (which), to decide sequences of R&D (how), to schedule R&D (when) and to coordinate with collaborators (who) and organizations (where).
The third 発 is 発信 : Contribution. I founded international conferences such as ISADS (International Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized Systems) sponsored by the academic societies including IEEE, which is been held around the world. Moreover, my efforts have been made towards the de-facto standardization at the consortia such as ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association). Through its openness, the ADS technologies can contribute not only the various technical fields but also effect the business.
In conclusion, the ADS promotes the concept of thinking together, acting together and achieving together.
Biography:
Dr. Mori has proposed ADS (Autonomous Decentralized System) in 1977 and consistently contributed in its concept creation, technologies invention, product designing, business planning, development, implementation, de-facto standardization and foundation of international meetings.
The ADS concept was proposed on the analogy with the molecular biology, which completely changed the conventional system concepts of the centralized, hierarchical and functional distributed systems. Based on the innovative concept, he created the system architecture called Data Field Architecture. After that, he invented the communication and computing technologies for realizing the ADS and the patents reached more than 350, which are registered worldwide. The importance of these patents has been recognized by the Science and Technology Minister’s Patent Award, Japan (1987), and the Japan Best Patent Award (1990). He conceived the business model for the ADS to apply the technologies and transferred these technologies into many industries. The markets include factory automation, train transportation, utility management, telecommunication, information service systems and so on. He has been implementing these technologies in the past 30 years and the overall sales volume of the products has exceeded beyond US$5,000,000,000. His developed systems have been operated successfully as the fundamental industrial infrastructure systems in Japan and the world. His contribution to implement his invented technologies to the real systems has been rewarded by one of the most prestigious award in Japan, The Special Distinguished Ichimura Award with the cash of JP\10,000,000 (US$100,000) conferred by the Honorable Prince Mikasanomiya. For globally expanding the market of the ADS, he presented his technologies at several consortia including ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association, US) to formulate the international de-facto standards, which have been approved. He also founded several IEEE sponsored international meetings including ISADS (International Symposium on ADS) for accelerating the activities of the research and development in the world, and these meetings have been held all over the world. He moved from the company to the university in 1997 not only for the educating the young students but also for creating the future technologies.
Now he is directing the ADS projects of the government, industries and universities and contributing to the developing countries through the cooperative research exchange programs. |
