Abstract:
In this lecture, I will discuss the multidiscplinary field of materials
science at the nanometer scale and the way this is approached at the Zernike
Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen. I will
explain how physicists, chemists and biologists work together to create new
functional properties at the nanoscale. Top-down, bottom-up,and bio-inspired
approaches will be discussed. Examples that will be addressed are, amongst
others, molecular motors, plastic electronics, and multi-ferroics. The
topmaster degree in nanoscience as well as the PhD program of the institute
will be addressed as well.
Curriculum Vitae
Professor Jasper Knoester received his PhD in theoretical physics at Utrecht
University (The Netherlands) in 1987.After postdoctoral training in
Rochester, NY, USA, he returned to The Netherlands in 1989, where he was
awarded a Huygens Fellowship by the Dutch government to initiate a new field
of nonlinear optical spectroscopy at the Chemistry Department of the
University of Groningen. In 1993, he became full professor of Theoretical
Condensed Matter Physics at the same university. His primary fields of
interest are nonlinear optical spectroscopy of condensed phases and
biological systems, excited state dynamics in molecular aggregates and
proteins, wave propagation in inhomogeneous media, and plasmonics. In
2001/2002 he was visiting professor at the Chemistry Department of MIT
(USA). Since 2003 he has been scientific director of the Zernike Institute
for Advanced Materials in Groningen. This institute has about 280 members
(staff, postdocs and PhD students) and is one of only six officially
recognized Centers of Excellence in The Netherlands. Professor Knoester is
board member of several national and international scientific organizations.
He has (co-)authored about 130 scientific papers.

Introduction and position of the Institute
The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, offers a two-year international Master’s degree program in Nanoscience, as one component of its Graduate Programme in Nanoscience. (The PhD programme is the second component.) The curriculum is strongly interdisciplinary, combining state-of-art solid state physics with modern physical and synthetic chemistry. The Zernike Institute is one of only six Centers of Excellence in The Netherlands and has had this status, awarded by the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, since 1998. It owes this special position to its excellent research groups in physics, chemistry, and biochemistry. These groups join forces in an interdisciplinary research program focusing on the design and scientific study of novel functional materials, with a special emphasis on materials and phenomena operating at the nanometer scale. Citation analysis shows that worldwide the center ranks 10th in the field of materials oriented research and first in Europe (citations per publication). Also, the German CHE ranking of science faculties puts Groningen in the so-called Excellence Group of the best universities of Europe (www.excellence-ranking.org). The Zernike Institute takes a particularly strong position in the field of organic and molecular electronics, molecular motors, spintronics, complex materials, and ultrafast dynamics. Programme
The Master’s degree programme in Nanoscience was started in 2003 with the aim to educate a new generation of young scientists in modern materials science, which requires training in both physics and chemistry. The first year consists mainly of course work, while the second year is largely reserved for a research project. This programme is a so-called “top”master, which implies that it is a selective programme for excellent, ambitious students planning to pursue a Ph.D. and eventually a professional academic career. The Programme has a highly selective admission procedure; only the brightest and most ambitious students from all over the world will be admitted. Qualified students may receive a competitive scholarship package (up to 630 Euro per month; in addition the tuition fee of 9300 Euro per year will generally be reimbursed; health insurance will be provided). Students who are successful during their Master training will generally be invited to pursue their Ph.D. training at the Zernike Institute with full scholarship.

· A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in either physics or chemistry, or
· A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in another field, deemed appropriate by the Admissions Board

· Appropriate attitude, motivation, ambition, and talent, as evidenced in a motivation letter
· Recommendations by qualified referees.
