Abstract:

In recent years, deep physical insight has been achieved into the structure of the periodic system of chemical elements. Qualitatively, most of chemistry of the first half of the elements can be understood at the nonrelativistic level. The understanding of the trend changes in the lower part of the periodic system requires relativistic quantum chemistry. For several reasons there is no sense in extending the periodic system over the 7th row.
