MIXED CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER Brief Review of the Fundamentals, State of the Art and Design Procedures Prof. J. D. Jackson University of Manchester, UK Summary Mixed convection is an important mode of heat transfer in which interactions between free and forced convection occur as a result of buoyancy-induced motion. These cause the effectiveness of heat transfer to be modified in a surprising manner which, potentially, can have serious practical consequences. Mixed convection is encountered in a variety of industrial applications, notably, nuclear and conventional power generation, electronic systems cooling, air conditioning and ventilation, food and chemical manufacturing and gas turbine systems. This short presentation on mixed convection will be given by Professor J.D. Jackson of the University of Manchester, UK, an internationally recognised expert on the subject who, through his research, has contributed extensively to the present understanding of buoyancy-influenced convection. He has recently completed a detailed report on mixed convection research which provides a wide-ranging and up to date picture of the state of the art and of practical design procedures. This material has been offered as a one day ‘in house’ training seminar at a number of companies and research organizations in the UK and elsewhere. It was presented in a form suitable for engineers and scientists having some prior knowledge of heat transfer but not necessarily an in-depth understanding of the subject. In the present short lecture at Tsinghua University he will give an outline of the material covered in the one day training seminars. About the Speaker Prof. Jackson is from the University of Manchester in the UK. He is an expert on fluid flow, heat transfer applied to nuclear reactors. His work on the effects of non-uniformity of fluid properties on convective heat transfer to gases liquids and also fluids at supercritical pressure was followed by studies of mixed convection, transient turbulent flow, radiative heat mission and of problems involving boiling, condensation and evaporation. In addition he was responsible for an extensive programme of research on heat transfer to liquid sodium and the characteristics and scattering properties of argon/sodium aerosol mixtures. In recent times Prof. Jackson has concentrated his attention on thermal aspects of very advanced nuclear reactor systems (Generation IV reactors). He currently sits on the Advisory Panel of the EU funded project on High Performance Light Water Reactors and has just joined the newly initiated IAEA Coordinated Research Programme (CRP) on Advanced Water-cooled Reactors. |
