Dr. William J. Weber is currently a Laboratory Fellow in the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and serves as Chair of the PNNL Council of Fellows. He received a B.S. degree in physics (1971, cum laude, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh) and both a M.S. degree (1972) and a Ph.D. (1977) in nuclear engineering (University of Wisconsin-Madison). He joined the staff of PNNL in 1977 and was appointed to Laboratory Fellow in 1997. Dr. Weber’s research interests are interaction of radiation with solids, fundamental radiation effects and ion-beam modification in materials, defects and defect interactions in solids, electronic and ionic transport, and materials characterization. Dr. Weber has authored/co-authored over 475 publications. He has received three Best Paper Awards and one patent. He is the recipient of the U. S. Department of Energy's Materials Science Award for Research with Significant Implication for DOE Related Technologies (1995), PNNL Director's Award for Scientific and Engineering Excellence (1995), and PNNL Chester L. Cooper Mentor of the Year Award (2005). In 2001, his work on developing radiation-resistant ceramics was recognized by DOE, Office of Science - Decades of Discovery as one of the top 101 innovations during the prior 25 years. He is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2000), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2006), a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (2008), and a member of the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, Sigma Pi Sigma, International Committee for Radiation Effects in Insulators, and International Committee for Computer Simulation of Radiation Effects in Solids. He currently serves as a Principal Editor for the Journal of Materials Research (2002-2009) and previously served on the editorial board for Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section B (2003-2008).
Dr. Yanwen Zhang is a staff Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). She received B.S. (1990) and M.S. (1993) degrees in solid state physics at Beijing Normal University (China), and was awarded a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics (1998) from Lund University (Sweden) and a Ph.D. in Science (1999) from Beijing Normal University (China). After earning two Ph.D. degrees, she held positions as a Postdoctoral Fellow (1999) and Assistant Professor (2000-2002) at Uppsala University (Sweden), and joined PNNL in 2003. Dr. Zhang was awarded Honorary Docent from Lund University in 2004 after a rigorous evaluation of scientific achievements and pedagogical skills. Since 2006, she has held a guest professor appoint at Peking University (China), where she supervises graduate student research and enhances PNNL-Peking University collaborations in the field of materials research. Dr. Zhang currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board for Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research, Section B (2009-2011).
Dr. Zhang’s notable experience and accomplishment over the years is highlighted by her publication record, which includes 120 journal articles (lead author on 57), and 15 peer-reviewed conference papers. She is an author of an invited chapter: MeV Ion beam Modification of Materials in the book Electrostatic Accelerators - Techniques and Applications, and is a co-editor for a forthcoming book on Ion Beams in Nanoscience and Technology. She has given 64 presentations at universities, research institutions, scientific conferences and workshops, including 30 invited presentations. In recognition of her professional and personal achievements, community service and exemplary leadership, she was the recipient of a 2005 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and DOE Office of Science Early Career Scientist and Engineer Award. Dr. Zhang has organized several society symposia and conference sessions, serves as a reviewer for international journals, and has been active in mentoring of students at the high school, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. |
