Abstract:

In this talk, I will introduce the research work in our group. I will then present a structurelet analysis framework for image / video representation and coding. During the past several years, we have witnessed a significant amount of efforts on seeking new schemes for visual data representation and next-generation methods for image / video compression. In this work, we consider an image as an orderless set of structural components satisfying a set of imaging constraints. We then formulate the problem of image encoding and decoding as a constrained optimization process. We will discuss related encoder design and performance optimization issues.

Biography：

Zhihai He (S'98--M'01--SM'06) received the B.S. degree from Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China, and the M.S. degree from Institute of Computational Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, in 1994 and 1997 respectively, both in mathematics, and the Ph.D. degree from University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, in 2001, in electrical engineering. In 2001, he joined Sarnoff Corporation, Princeton, NJ, as a Member of Technical Staff.

In 2003, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Missouri, Columbia, as an assistant professor.  His current research interests include image/video processing and compression, network transmission, wireless communication, computer vision analysis, sensor networks, and embedded system design.
