Biography
In 1996, Qin Yong join in IBM Research - China after earning his Ph.D degree in speech signal processing field from Institute of Acoustic (IOA) of Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the past 13 years, his work widely covered research and development activities of IBM speech products, including the first Mandarin ViaVoice Dictation System, IBM ViaVoice Telephony Runtime & Tools, IBM Embedded ViaVoice, IBM Websphere Voice Server, IBM Speech Transcription Technology (GALE) and IBM Real Time Translation Service (RTTS). Qin Yong’s expertise ranges from speech recognition to speech coding and speech application. Currently, he is the senior manager of IBM Research-China’s Information, Intelligence and Interaction (III) department. III's research efforts cover both speech processing and text analytics technologies. On speech, III’s goal is to work on applied speech research and develop advanced human-centric solutions. The latest work include the development of speech transcription services to help enterprise unlock business intelligence from multimedia documents and help non-native speakers overcome language barriers when speaking English. On text analytics, III’s goal is to develop the best text-based data mining and data cleansing technology, including smart web crawler to collect text information from different information sources, classification technologies to classify the input data into a structured category and advanced sentimental analysis solution.
Abstract
Exploring ways to utilize advanced speech technology to help solve business problems has been the research challenge IBM Research in China has been working on in addition to further improve speech maturity and quality of speech technology. In his talk, Dr. Kelvin Qin will discuss IBM Research - China's effort on how to leverage advanced speech technologies to make information accessible and consumable along with live demonstrations, including speech transcription for multimedia search, text-to-speech for information accessing, keyword spotting for information insight and user-friendly user interface. |
