CV of Dr. Martin Ottmar

Dr. Martin Ottmar was born in 1970 in Laupheim, Germany, and grew up bilingually due to a British mother.

From 1989 on, he studied chemistry at Tübingen University, Germany. In 1995, he joined the group of Professor Michael Hanack and obtained his diploma (master's degree) in 1996. He subsequently completed his dissertation in organic synthesis three years later, focusing on phthalocyanine chemistry and organic light-emitting devices.

In June 1999, he embarked on a two-year stay in Japan as a postdoc at Osaka University, where he worked in the group of Professor Yasuhiko Shirota (城田靖彦教授) on combining phthalocyanines with amorphous molecular materials.

In 2001, Martin Ottmar returned to Germany and took up a position from October on as Commissioning Editor for materials science and chemistry books. He has been in the publishing profession ever since, planning and commissioning monographs, handbooks, textbooks and multivolume reference works as well as book series for 6½ years. He additionally took on Editorship of the Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry in 2007.

In March 2008, he chose journals as a new challenge and became Deputy Editor of Advanced Materials (www.advmat.de), one of the leading international materials science journals worldwide. His responsibilities include the screening of manuscripts, organising peer review, making decisions on acceptance of manuscripts as well as extensive communication with authors, reviewers and readers. He visits conferences and institutions in order to network with the scientific community and invite critical content such as Review articles from outstanding scientists. In the context of journal management and development of the Wiley-VCH materials journal product portfolio, he is responsible for the journal's strategy and content planning together with his colleague David Flanagan and Editor-in-Chief, Peter Gregory.
