Abstract

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have been incorporated in all recently developed wireless communications systems standards including WiMAX and 3GPP LTE. The number of antennas remains low, however, in current systems. For example, first-generation mobile WiMAX systems only employ two transmit antennas and the transmission scheme is based on either the Alamouti code or pure spatial multiplexing. For future generations, there is a strong interest both in more sophisticated space-time codes and higher number of antennas. With two transmit antennas, the best known full-rate code is the Golden code, which leads to a coding gain of 3.2 for all QAM signal constellations. But this code has a high decoding complexity, which grows with the 4th power of the number of points in the signal constellation. This has motivated research to develop space-time codes of lower decoding complexity, and several space-time codes were recently developed whose maximum-likelihood decoding complexity grows only quadratically with the size of the signal constellation.

In the talk, we will review the space-time codes used in current wireless systems and summarize the results of research towards fast maximum-likelihood decodable space-time codes. The presentation will focus on 2x2 and 4x4 space-time codes.

Biography:

Hikmet Sari is Professor and Head of the Telecommunications Department at SUPELEC, which is one of the leading graduate schools in France in the field of Electrical Engineering. Since December 2004, he has also been Chief Scientist of SEQUANS Communications, a Paris-based start-up, which has become one of the leading providers of system-on-chip solutions for WiMAX. Previously, he held scientific and key management positions at Philips, SAT (SAGEM Group), Alcatel, Pacific Broadband Communication and Juniper Networks.

Dr. Sari is a world-renowned expert in the field of wireless communications. He is recognized both in academia and industry. He has published over 180 journal and conference papers, holds over 25 patents, and has given numerous invited talks in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. He served on the Awards Committee of the IEEE Communications Society from 2005 to 2007 and on the Fellow Evaluation Committee of this society from 2002 to 2007. He was elevated to the grade of IEEE Fellow in 1995. He received the André Blondel Medal from the SEE (France) in 1995 and the Edwin H. Armstrong Award from the IEEE Communications Society in 2003. He has served as Editor or Guest Editor for several international journals including the IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC), IEEE Communications Letters, European Transactions on Telecommunications and Related Technologies (ETT), and EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. He was Chair of the Communication Theory Symposium of ICC 2002 (April 2002, New York), Technical Program Chair of ICC 2004, (June 2004, Paris) and Vice General Chair of ICC 2006 (June 2006, Istanbul). Presently, he is serving as General Chair for the forthcoming PIMRC 2010 and WCNC 2012 and as a member of the Executive Board of the European Network of Excellence on Wireless Communications.
