· Single-thread performance is no longer scaling

· Performance = Parallelism

· Efficiency = Locality

· Applications have lots of both

·     Machines need lots of cores (parallelism) and an exposed storage hierarchy (locality)

·     A programming system must abstract this

·     The future is even more parallel
