Abstract:
Interactions in ultracold quantum gases at nanokelvin temperatures give rise to intriguing and bizarre phenomena, when atoms get together as pairs, trios, quartetts, or very large ensembles. I will present the association of weakly bound dimer molecules in a single ro-vibrational quantum state and their coherent transfer to the ground-state of the system, where they open up exciting opportunities for realizing novel many-body system. I will then discuss recent achievements in few-body physics with ultracold atoms, presenting the formation of bizarre quantum trios, the so-called “Efimov states” and related four-body states with universal properties. I will finally present a recent example for quantum many-body physics. By precise measurements of collective oscillations in the BEC-BCS crossover in a strongly interacting Fermi gas, we could demonstrate the famous Lee-Huang-Yang correction in a strongly interacting Bose system, predicted more than 50 years ago.
