  简介:
The local environment within suitably tailored surfactant, polymer and gel systems can be regulated by the application of appropriate externally-applied stimuli such as temperature, pH, light, and redox conditions which can alter the state of association of components within the system.  This modulation of the environment can be exploited to control the thermodynamic and transport properties of solutes within solutions and gels, to provide effective media for, among other applications, controlled drug release, selective separations by extraction and affinity adsorption processes, and dynamic mediation of protein mobilities in gel electrophoresis. In this presentation we will discuss the design, synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive materials in which the reversible self-association of functional groups can be used to control the extraction of polar organics from aqueous media, the selective separation of proteins within mixtures, the release of materials sequestered within the gels, and the folding and unfolding of proteins.
