For the first time in history, over half the world's poplulation now lives in cities. The illustrated lecture will explore how the shape of our cities affects the future of our planet and the lives of over three billion urban dwellers. Based on research carried out by the London School of Echonomics and Political Science, the lecture will investigate the impact of fast-growing megacities like London, Sao Paulo, Istanbul and Mumbai on the physical and social environment. With reference to key examples from the current development of the plans for the London Olympics in 2012 Burdett willfocus on the role of architecture and urban design in creating sustainable cities. |
