Functional MRI (fMRI) has become the mainstay of neuroimaging in terms of mapping brain functions. The main advantages of fMRI include its noninvasive nature, the wide availability of high-field MRI scanners, balanced spatiotemporal resolution, and its large capacity to provide functional segregation responding to specific tasks.
The resting-state functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) method and its applications are rapidly advancing. The fcMRI method does not require subjects to perform specific tasks during scanning. In this presentation, “connectivity” is defined as the level showing structural and/or functional linkages from one cortical area or subcortical nuclei of the brain to others. It is hypothesized that human behaviors are determined by the patterns of brain network organization. Examples related to Alzheimer’s disease, drugs abuse, vegetative states, and depression cases, are provided to support this hypothesis.
Envisioned future study directions that illustrate a comprehensive and systematic human brain connectome are also discussed. Like a genomic project, the acquisition of multimodal imaging data, demographic data, genetic data, as well as data regarding sensory, motor, cognitive, emotional, and social functions, will facilitate our understanding of human brain functions and allow us to realize the importance of connectivity data, thereby unraveling the mysteries of the mind.
