For the past 20+ years, Magnetic Resonance Imaging has proven to be an important diagnostic tool in medicine. It provides exquisite soft tissue contrast without ionizing radiation, and the ability to acquire images in any scan plane. Only recently, has MRI been proposed as a tool to be used in image guided procedures, like biopsy, thermal treatment of cancer, guiding neurosurgical resection, or performing cardiovascular catheter based procedures like stenting of vessel narrowing. The transformation of MRI from a diagnostic to therapeutic tool, by Case Western Reserve University researchers (and others at different universities) involves the development of a variety of new biomedical devices, new signal processing algorithms, new image reconstruction schemes, and physics methods. This talk will describe the CWRU interventional MRI program, as well as some of the clinical applications in which it has had a medical impact. A brief introduction to the CWRU Biomedical Engineering Department will also be provided. |
