Evelyn Hu-DeHart (胡其渝), Professor of History and Asian American Studies, Brown University Lecture/workshop on “Chinese Diaspora in the Americas:  History and Literature.”   Prof. Hu-DeHart will provide a quick overview of the history of Chinese migration and settlement in the Americas—Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America—and situate some of the key literary texts produced in the Americas written primarily in English, with examples from Chinese and Spanish texts (with translation).   References will also be made to other Asian diasporas in the Americas, notably Japanese, Korean and East Indian.  As this is also a workshop, students are encouraged to bring their questions, issues and concerns about this topic to the table for discussion and debate.  Examples of different texts will be distributed for examination and discussion. 

 

King-Kok Cheung (张敬珏) is an American literary critic specializing in Asian American literature and is a professor in the department of English at UCLA. Cheung received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. She is now Visiting Professor at Peking University.
