Liu’s Short Bio
Dr. Gao Liu received a PhD in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 2001, where he had worked on polymer materials for lithium rechargeable batteries and other energy conversion systems. Dr. Liu joined the Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies (BATT) program at LBNL as a postdoc in 2001, and became a scientist in 2004. He has been working on polymer system for energy storage and conversion applications since he came to LBNL.

Abstract
Lithium-ion rechargeable battery with both high volumetric and gravimetric energy density is a promising candidate for all electric and plug-in electric vehicles. These high energy density systems can be charged on renewable energy such as solar and wind and allow for efficient transportation and a reduction of green house gas emissions. New materials and improved engineering techniques have boosted the capacity and lifetime of this system over the last 16 years. This presentation will provide an overview of both R&D history of the lithium-ion rechargeable battery system and the research programs in this area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, followed by our efforts of understanding and development of the polymer composite electrode for lithium-ion battery. Polymer binders, conductive additives and active material (lithium-ion storage material) are essential components in the electrodes as they each play a pivotal role in meeting the energy, power, and cycling performance. The degree to which the three components interact plays an important role in determining the overall battery performance. This presentation will highlight this importance and will provide guidance to making high energy density electrodes for vehicular applications.
