The last two decades have seen rapid development and clinical transition of large area, x-ray flat-panel imagers (FPI). In this presentation, the physics of direct and indirect conversion x-ray imaging detectors will be described, and the limitations of existing detector technologies outlined. The basic principle of operation of the emerging detector technologies will be explained, and the rationales for their improved performance and potential clinical applications will be summarized. Some of these new developments include: 1. Very high-resolution direct-conversion detectors for breast imaging; 2. Large area detector with low-noise CMOS readout; 3. FPI with avalanche gain obtained with an optically sensitive amorphous selenium photoconductive layer.
Digital tomosynthesis is limited angle tomography, and has received much interest in the last several years because of the rapid image readout of FPI. In this presentation, the latest development in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and the strategies for achieving the best image quality with limited angle acquisition will be discussed. |
