MRI is an attractive method for molecular imaging due to its noninvasive nature, high spatial resolution, outstanding signal to noise ratio and exceptional tissue contrast. Tumor extracelluar matrix (ECM) specific MRI probes have shown great potential for MRI molecular imaging because of the abundant presence of ECM in tumor microenvironment. Oncofetal fibronectins are found abundantly present in ECM but not in normal human tissue. They may be suitable for MRI molecular imaging in cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Fibronectin specific targeted nanoglobular contrast agents have been designed, prepared and evaluated for tumor MRI molecular imaging. Moreover, targeted contrast agents can also serve as drug delivery vehicles, combining diagnosis and therapy. These emerging molecular imaging agents and techniques provide a great opportunity for early disease recognition and tumor therapy.
