  简介:
How does neurons encode and store information at molecular level? Previous studies have focused on either protein or DNA, for examples, receptors trafficking or chromatin methylation. Recently, RNA and its regulation have emerged to play various important roles in biology. In this talk, I will present a new mechanism for information encoding based on RNA regulation, which is distinct from well-known RNA processes, such as splicing and microRNA/small RNA modulation. Using the gene, CPEB, as an example, I will first introduce alternative polyadenylation and its effects on mRNA trafficking and modulation in neurons, and then describe a new RNA phenomena which is coupled to activity and translation. Finally, I will discuss how this new RNA process could be used for information coding, including spatial and temporal control. I will also bring some evidences that other genes besides the CPEB may also use this new RNA process to precisely regulate and respond to biological activities.
