Abstract:
Recently chalcogenide glasses have emerged as a promising material for integrated nanophotonics given their wide infrared transparency, high Kerr nonlinearity and photosensitivity. Our unique combination of chalcogenide glass materials and planar optical resonant cavities (resonators) features strong spatial confinement of photons down to the wavelength scale, and thus enables full exploitation of the glass's superior optical properties. This talk reviews our ongoing work on the development of novel photonic cavity devices based on chalcogenide glasses and their applications for optical detection and manipulation of chem-bio molecules.
Bio:
Dr. Juejun (JJ) Hu joined the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Delaware as an assistant professor in 2010. He obtained a B.S. degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2004, and Ph.D. in Materials Science from MIT in 2009. Dr. Hu’s primary research interest focuses on the enhanced photon-matter interactions in optical resonant cavities, with an emphasis on chemical and biological sensing applications. His research also covers materials and devices for opto-mechanics, solid state light emitters, magneto-optics, and thin film photovoltaics. Dr. Hu has authored or co-authored 26 peer-reviewed journal papers since 2006. He has also been awarded 3 U.S. patents. For more detailed information please visit http://web.mit.edu/hujuejun/www/.
