Pulse radiolysis is a powerful technique for studying short-lived transients such as free radicals and excited states using short electron pulses provided by a LINAC. The advantage of this technique is the selective generation of free radicals and radical ions of interest using appropriate solvents. A number of radiation chemical investigations have been carried out with the nanosecond pulse radiolysis and the stroboscopic picosecond pulse radiolysis facilities installed at Hokkaido University. Radiolytically generated short-lived transients are detected using time resolved optical absorption spectroscopy,and he complex kinetics of eactive intermediates has been analyzed by computer simulations.  Photochemical reactions of short-lived transients have been studied using a combined pulse radiolysis and laser flash photolysis technique.Results are presented mainly concerning the reactivity and selectivity of the free chlorine atom and chlorine atom complexes, and photochemical reactions of the latter.
