JUNICHI YAMAKI is a Professor at the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering at Kyushu University. He was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1947. Since 1978, he has been studying lithium batteries, including cathode materials, electrolytes, and anode materials. He has also studied practical cell development, safety, and performance evaluation. Between 1991 and 1992, Dr. Yamaki worked as the Research Director on a project to develop practical lithium batteries at the Advanced Energy Technologies Inc. in Vancouver, Canada, which is a joint venture company of NTT and Mori Energy. In 1997, Dr. Yamaki joined the Institute of Advanced Material Study (presently the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering), Kyushu University, as a Professor. His current research interests include the thermal stability of materials in lithium ion cells related to cell safety, fluorinated solvent electrolytes to improve the thermal stability, and theoretical experiments on the potential of intercalation electrodes. Professor Yamaki has published over 100 papers, written over 150 patents, and has been invited to numerous conferences. Professor Yamaki received the International Battery Association Yeager Award in 1997 for his significant contributions to lithium batteries.
