Charles McKenna, Ph. D Professor of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Southern California
Research Interests:
Professor McKenna's research program is based on the application of chemical methods to probes of biological interest. Currently, he is investigating the design and synthesis of potential anti-AIDS agents. His research in organophosphorus chemistry is focused on the creation of new inhibitors of HIV and opportunistic AIDS pathogens such as Cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma gondii. Professor McKenna also studies the mechanism of biological N2 fixation.
Since 1989 Prof. McKenna has been a Professor of Chemistry at USC (University of Southern California, Los Angeles) and since 2000, he has also been Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, USC. Prof. McKenna is the inventor of the five patents related to Thiovir (TPFA), of which ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals is the exclusive licensee. Prof. McKenna has directed the research of TPFA conducted at USC pursuant to research grants formerly provided by PerArdua Investors, LLP, the partnership from which the Company obtained the licenses related to Thiovir.
Prof. McKenna serves as consultant to ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals regarding chemical synthesis of its products and concerning development of new compounds for both antiviral and anticancer applications. Prof. McKenna received a B.A. degree from Oakland University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at San Diego. |
