This talk will discuss the role of translation in the dissemination of certain images of the imperial rivals, namely England and Spain, and the ways in which translators altered original texts in Spanish for their own ideological stances. It will focus on the Spanish chronicle of the conquest of Peru, and the four existing translations from the 17th century. It will also discuss the appropriation of these translations by American scholars to produce their own ideologically-biased research.
