  简介:
报告摘要:High energy particle collider experiments are facing ever more challenging conditions, operating at current and future accelerators which are providing instantaneous luminosity of 1034 cm-2s-1 and above. The high center of mass energy, the large number of simultaneous collisions of beam particles and the very high repetition rates of the collision events pose huge challenges. This results in extremely high particle fluxes, causing very high occupancy in the detectors operating at these machines. Detectors which can provide timing measurements with a precision of a few 10 ps can be a major aid in the reconstruction of the physics events in this high pile-up environment. In this talk I will present a broad range of R&D activities on precision timing detectors for particle physics.  Calorimeter based measurements as well as charged particle timing technologies will be discussed. I will discuss possible implementations of precision timing detectors for the upgrades of the LHC detectors to cope with the conditions expected at the high luminosity upgrade of the accelerator as well as for future colliders.
报告人简介:Dr. Adi Bornheim is a research scientist at the California Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in 1999 from Bonn University in Germany with a novel method to measure the proton structure functions F2 and Fl, performed with the ZEUS detector at the DESY laboratory. He then moved to Cornell University as a Caltech postdoctoral fellow to work on b-physics with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron collider. His focus was on physics studies of radiative b-decays. Since 2003 he is a member of the CMS collaboration. In CMS, Adi Bornheim contributed to the final design stages of the crystal ECAL detector. This was followed by leading roles in the installation, commissioning and calibration of the CMS ECAL. More than 10 years of intense work on this monumental detector was rewarded with the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. Since then, Adi Bornheim has shifted his activity towards R&D for the Phase II upgrade of CMS for the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC and future collider experiments. His research is focused on developing particle detectors with timing resolutions in the ps regime.
