报告摘要: In the mammalian ear, sounds are converted into vibrations of the basilar membrane of the cochlea which, in turn, are transduced into electrical receptor potentials in hair cells and encoded in the trains of action potentials of auditory-nerve fibers. The properties of basilar-membrane vibrations have been well described for a few basal sites of healthy cochleae in living animals but few recordings exist for apical sites and these are flawed due to the experimental procedures. My laboratory has gleaned the missing information by studying the responses of auditory-nerve fibers which, for basal locations in the chinchilla cochlea, are largely determined by basilar-membrane vibrations. Using responses of auditory-nerve fibers, we have obtained a general view of the encoding of sound throughout the chinchilla cochlea.
