Jason J. Chruma received a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of Arizona (w/ Prof. Robin Polt) and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (w/ Prof. Amos B. Smith, III). After completing an NIH postdoctoral fellowship with the late Prof. Ronald C. Breslow at Columbia University, he began an independent career in 2005 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia. In 2012, he moved to the College of Chemistry at Sichuan University where he is currently a Professor and Assistant to Dean. His independent research is primarily focused on the development of new methods for the synthesis of alkaloids and other bioactive nitrogen-containing organic frameworks. He has won numerous teaching awards. Additionally, he has served as a scientific consultant to craft beer breweries in China on the use of Sichuan peppercorn (花椒) in their products.

报告摘要
The 2-azaallyl anion is one of the earliest known intermediates in synthetic organic chemistry. The past decade has witnessed significant renewed interest in semi-stabilized 2-azaallyl anions as intermediates toward the synthesis of alkaloid natural products and pharmaceutically-relevant scaffolds. Traditionally,generation of 2-azaallyl anions requires deprotonation of the conjugate acid with a strong base under anhydrous and, frequently, anaerobic reaction conditions. Our group, however, has championed a decarboxylative reaction manifold, typically facilitated by transition metal catalysts, which allows for the generation and alkylation of semi-stabilized 2-azaallyl anions under a broader range of reaction conditions. This talk will recount past successes and recent advances from our group's efforts in this arena. Very recent success involving transition metal-free generation and alkylations/arylations of 2- azaallyl radicals will also be introduced.
