报告摘要1

The use of proton beams for radiotherapy has been proposed in the 1940s and patients have been treated with this modality since the 1960s. With the advent of more powerful computers for therapy planning and fast electronics for sophisticated controls in the 1990s it became possible to even better exploit the therapeutic advantage of protons by employing magnetic pencil beam scanning. While pioneering work was carried out in physics research laboratories therapy facilities have now become commercially available by a number of vendors. Technology-driven research is ongoing to further improve the quality of protontherapy and make it available to a larger number of patients.

报告人1简介:

Martin Grossmann has studied physics in Munster (Germany) and Lausanne (Switzerland). He worked in High Energy Physics at the European Laboratory for Particle physics (CERN) in Geneva and in Muon Physics at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) near Zurich, Switzerland. In 1995 he joined PSI’s Center for Protontherapy (CPT). He programmed the therapy control system for the world's first pencil beam scanning gantry which started clinical operations in 1996. For many years he led the IT & Electronics group at CPT and was in charge of control and safety systems for several PSI built treatment rooms. He is now Senior Technical Advisor at CPT.

Martin Grossmann is Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) where he is an active member of several technical and administrative committees. He has been involved in the organization of the recent editions of the Real Time Conference as well as Instrumentation Schools in Capetown, Kuala Lumpur, Sao Paulo, Dakar and Ho Chi Minh City.

报告摘要2

The high dose conformity of Pencil Beam Scanned (PBS) proton plan necessarily requests high precision for information on both tumour and surrounding tissues. “Motion” is the one of the most detrimental factors to compromise treatment quality for proton. Depending on the time scale, respiration and heart beating are occurring intra-fractionally, while digesting movement and muscle relaxation can cause inter-field geometric difference within single fraction. More severely, the reaction of tumour and involved tissues due to applied radiation can induce more pronounced anatomic changes. The dosimetric impacts due to those changes are significant, individualized and can be influenced by many parameters. Mitigating such adverse effect is of vital importance for expanding the clinical advantages of PBS proton treatment towards more crucial indications in those regions.

In this talk, the challenges for managing intra-fractional motion are introduced, and various strategies for improving the precision, effectiveness and efficiency of PBS proton 4D treatments are outlined. The role of 4D dose calculation, motion modelling, model-based online image guidance, 4D anthropomorphic numerical phantoms and deformable image registration for PBS proton treatment at tumour sites of liver, lung and pancreas will be elucidated. In the second part, I would like to present my vision and recent projects of real-time adaptive proton therapy for achieving a truly personalized treatment. The potential advantage and challenges of using onboard MR as online image guidance for proton therapy will be illustrated. Prospective applications of deep learning method to improve the precise and efficiency of the real time treatment workflow will be demonstrated.

报告人2简介:

Dr. Ye Zhang is a scientist at Center for Proton therapy (CPT) in Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). She graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) in 2008, and completed the M.Sc degree from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Sweden) in 2010. In 2013, she received her PhD degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). She subsequently worked as research scientist in Varian Medical Systems, before re-joining PSI as postdoc researcher in 2016. Since summer 2018, she has been holding a position of tenure-track scientist in PSI-CPT.

Her main research interests lie in the developments of 4D treatments for scanned proton therapy, especially for 4D treatment planning and optimization, online image guidance, motion modelling and daily adaptive radiotherapy. Recently, she starts to explore the potential applications of artificial intelligent and online MR guidance for proton therapy. She is the author or co-author of over 30 peer reviewed articles in the major journals of medical physics, and has contributed more than 70 oral or post presentations in the well-established regional or international conferences (e.g. ESTRO, PTCOG, AAPM and etc). She is engaging as PI for two funded projects, and has been supervising 4 PhD students and more than 30 master or bachelor theses. Her research works have been many times highlighted on the medicalphysicsweb / PhysicsWorld. She was honored to receive the Chinese Government award for outstanding student abroad (2012). She is a member of PTCOG thoracic subcommittee and served a regular reviewer for more than 15 journals in the field. She will contribute as Scientific Advisory Group member for ESTRO 2023.
