Abstract

 

Water impact, green water on deck and sloshing in tanks are discussed by analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. Green water on deck is categorized in terms of dam-breaking, plunging waves and hammer-fist type. A domain-decomposition method is used to solve the problem numerically. A multi-modal method has been developed to describe strongly nonlinear sloshing. Ordering of the modes is an essential part. A system of nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equation with analytical coefficients is numerically time integrated to find generalized coordinates for the modes. Stability of the flow in a 3D square-based tank is discussed. Hydroelasticity and the formation of air cushions during liquid impact during sloshing are addressed. The studies for a tank are generalized to handle resonant water motion between the hulls of a multihull or a moonpool. Future challenges in marine hydrodynamics that will be addressed at our Centre for Ships and Ocean Structures will also be presented.

 

 

Brief Biography:

 

Prof. Odd Faltinsen got his PhD in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1971 at the University of Michigan. He is now Professor of Marine Hydrodynamics with sea loads on all kinds of marine structures and hydroelasticity as his main research fields. He has been member of 5 International Towing Tank Conferences (ITTC) committees including 2 as chairman, and 3 International Ship Structure Committees (ISSC) dealing with sea loads. Faltinsen is elected a member of the Norwegian Academy for Technical Sciences, Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering, US. He is a fellow of Royal Institute of Naval Architecture and has been appointed in the honorary position as Visiting Professor at University College London from 2006. Faltinsen is the author of the textbook Sea loads on Ships and Offshore Structures (Cambridge Univ. Press), which is extensively used across the world. He has authored more than 250 publications in scientific journals, conferences and books, and given more than 20 keynotes and honours lectures.
