China’s India: A Research Proposal

主讲人:Wen-hsin Yeh, Morrison Professor, Department of History and Director, Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley

It is commonplace in modern discourses to represent China in contrast to the West. Yet culturally, historically and in many other ways, India stands no less significantly for a cultural “other” to China’s “self.” Before Europe, India was China’s “West.” Thanks to Europe, India became, in the 20th century, part of the timeless and benighted “East,” along with China, where metaphysics triumphed over science.

For more than two centuries, interactions between China and India have been mediated in evolving international contexts of colonialism, socialism, postcolonialist nationalism and post-socialist modernization. China and India shared not so much a borderline as a shifting zone carved by peaks and valleys and ceaselessly traversed by a multitude of people of diverse ethnicities, languages, and beliefs. China’s India is at once a symbolic sign and a material place. Interactions between the two societies have transformed lives both within and outside China and fashioned the styles of existence in southwest China. In this presentation, Professor Wen-hsin Yeh will elaborate on some of these themes and lay the groundwork for a proposed joint interdisciplinary research project for Tsinghua and Berkeley.
