 2007年清华大学信息技术研究院系列学术报告14

Dr. Didier LeGall earned his master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He received his undergraduate degrees from Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France and Technical University Darmstadt, Germany.

Dr. LeGall was manager of the Visual Communication group at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore).  At Bellcore, LeGall worked on compression algorithms for digital video and digital HDTV. He also held an adjunct professorship at Columbia University from 1985 to 1989 where he taught Digital signal processing and Image processing.

Dr. LeGall started the standardization effort of the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) and served as chairman of the MPEG Video group from 1989 to 1995 delivering two international standards MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 that have since had a major impact on the industry.

Dr. LeGall was co-founder and CTO of C-Cube Microsystems up until C-Cube’s acquisition by LSI Logic in 2001. At LSI Logic, Didier served as vice president and general manager of the Home Media product group with P&L responsibility for DVD, recordable DVD and professional digital video products. In 2003, he became vice president of engineering for LSI Logic’s Broadband Entertainment group and was responsible for DVD, DVD recordable, professional video, set-top box and digital TV integrated circuits. During his tenure as vice president and general manager, LeGall grew LSI Logic’s market share of DVD recorder ICs to well over 50 percent.

Didier LeGall co-founded Ambarella Inc. in 2004 along with other Ambarella founding members, to drive innovation in hybrid digital cameras and define a new class of consumer products.

Dr. LeGall is the author or co-author of over thirty digital video-related patents. He is also the author of many technical publications and co-authored two books.

Abstrct

The main topic is about the past, present and the future of digital video technology.

As a pioneer in the digital video compression technology and the analog to digital transition, Dr. LeGall will talk about how the compression technology has changed our lives in the past. Today, digital video is everywhere. Flat panel and high definition displays are quickly becoming mainstream. Dr. LeGall will also present his view on what will be the next new thing in digital video. The audiences will also have a chance to learn what Dr. LeGall is working on at present.
