  简介:

Abstract:

Network calculus is a new theory dealing with queueing type problems encountered in computer
networks, with particular focus on quality of service guarantee analysis. Queueing theory is the
mathematical study of queues, proven to be applicable to a wide area of problems, generally
concerning about the (average) quantities in an equilibrium state. Since both network calculus and
queueing theory are analytical tools for studying queues, a question arises naturally as is if and
where network calculus and queueing theory meet. In this talk, fundamental queueing principles
underlying network calculus will first be explored. Then, based on the network calculus queueing
principles, it will be shown that for GI/GI/1, similar inequalities in the theory of queues can be
derived. In addition, the network calculus queueing principles will be extended to the tandem
network case, based on which, the end-to-end performance of a tandem network will be
investigated, and some interesting findings will be presented, including that the end-to-end
performance is independent of the order of servers in the network even under some general settings. Through these, a new (network calculus) insight on queueing problems is provided, revealing that network calculus and queueing theory are two sides of one coin.

Biography:

Prof. Yuming Jiang received his BSc degree from Peking University, MEng degree from Beijing
Institute of Technology, and PhD degree from the National University of Singapore. From 1996 to 1997, he worked with Motorola as a Technical Trainer. From 1999 to 2001, he was a Research Engineer at National University of Singapore. From 2001 to 2003, he was with the Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore, as a Member of Technical Staff and Research Scientist, where he led the Next Generation Networks Lab. Since 2004, he has been with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where he is now a full Professor. His research interests include the provision of quality of service in communication networks, performance evaluation of communication networks, and network calculus. His group has made important contributions to the development of stochastic network calculus, based on which, a book entitled "Stochastic Network Calculus" was published by Springer in 2008.
