The UC Davis Compact Toroid Injection eXperiment (CTIX) is a coaxial accelerator which was designed to inject high density plasma fuel into a magnetic fusion device, such as tokamak, stellarator, etc. The unique feature of the accelerator is that it can be operated in a repetitive mode at a rate as high as 1 Hz. The CTIX device consists of a formation section where the spheromak-like compact toroid (CT) is created, and an acceleration section where the CT is accelerated to over 200 km/sec. The present CTIX accelerator is the third generation device with a great deal of improvements resulting from the understanding of formation and acceleration physics. A number of new diagnostics such as fast magnetic probes system, fast optical imaging, deflectometry density measurement, etc. are now available on the accelerator for plasma studies. Recent results include: 1) Amplification of the CT internal magnetic field during acceleration 2) Fast imaging of MHD flow into targets 3) Density buildup by gas injection in acceleration section 4) Plasma injection into a diamagnetic field structure 5) Comparison between deflection and interferometry density measurements 6) Experimental study of MHD turbulence Other areas of potential studies are 1) solar plasma simulation 2) Plasma propulsion 3) High current plasma switches The size of the CTIX device makes it relatively easy to operate. It is therefore well suited for student research projects. |
