As neural nets have matured, many subfields have taken on a substantial life of their own. This talk will argue that this is a necessary and healthy development, and that such subfields still have profound mutual dependencies on the rest of neurally-inspired research. Furthermore, much work remains in traditional neural net design -- work that promises substantial progress for engineering applications. The talk will point out a few such directions and their motivations.
