Ultrawideband (UWB) systems, where the bandwidth exceeds 500 MHz, have drawn great attention due to the improved resistance to interference and fading, and the possibility of precise geolocation with UWB systems. As for any wireless system, the propagation channel determines the ultimate performance limits of UWB systems; however, UWB channels are different from the conventional (narrowband) channels. For example, the well-known and widely used WSSUS (wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering) assumption is not valid anymore. In this talk, I will outline the key propagation effects in UWB channels, and explain the differences between UWB and narrowband channels. I will then describe how those effects impact system design, as well as system performance. I will discuss the impact on the design of Rake receivers for impulse radio, multiband-OFDM design, and receivers for ranging and geolocation.

Andreas F. Molisch received his Ph.D. and his habilitation from the Technical University of Vienna. After a time at AT&T Bell Laboratories (NJ, USA), he is now with Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (Cambrigde, MA, USA), and also Professor and Chair holder for Radio Systems at Lund University, Sweden. His current research interests include wireless propagation channels, MIMO, UWB, and cooperative communications. He is the author of 4 books (among them, the
recent textbook "Wireless Communications", IEEE-Press Wiley, 2005), 11 book chapters, more than 90 journal papers, and numerous conference contributions. He has been chairman of several international standardization groups and other professional organizations, editor for journals and special issues, and recipient of a number of awards. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
