Current optical techniques do not allow astronomers to analyze the light from earth-like planets circling nearby stars. I will describe how an optical vortex lens may be used to completely null light from a star so that only the planet light is detected. If analysis of this light reveals oxygen absorption lines it will be the first evidence of life beyond Earth.
