Dr. Jian Liu is currently a Lecturer in Department of Chemical Engineering, Curtin University of Technology, Australia. Supervised by Prof. Qihua Yang and Prof. Can Li, he obtained his Ph.D. degrees from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS, China, in 2009. He then joined AIBN, UQ where his research interest includes nanostructured degradable polymer and related nanostructured materials. In April 2013, Dr Liu joined Curtin University as a lecturer. He will further advance the nanoporous and hollow materials as nanoreactor and drug delivery vehicles, particularly for nanobiocatalysis.

Dr. Liu has published more than 80 peer reviewed journal articles including Nature Communications, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., JACS, Adv. Funct. Mater. et al. His entire publications have been cited for over 2800 times, an H-index of 30.

Carbon spheres, integrating the advantages of carbon materials and spherical colloids, exhibit several unique features such as regular geometry, good liquidity, tunable porosity and controllable particle size distribution as compared to powders or flakes, and therefore these innovative materials present a great utilitarian value for catalysis, adsorption, water and air purification, energy storage and conversion.1-5 In this presentation, I will discuss our recent progress toward advanced colloidal carbon spheres for energy applications. Our synthesis strategies provide a new benchmark for fabricating well-defined porous carbonaceous nanospheres with a great promise for energy storage and conversion applications.
