Multiphase flows have been the focus of both academic and engineering interests and play a ubiquitous role in our everyday life as well as in numerous industrial and natural processes such as wastewater treatment, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, food, chemicals, petrochemicals, biotechnology, glass manufacture, metallurgy, blood flow, volcanic eruption, etc. The rates of transfer processes and (bio-)chemical reactions are mainly governed by the flow fields established around particles (bubbles, drops and solids) in a continuous phase. In spite of the extensive research since several centuries, it is still a challenge to understand multiphase flows, in particular when complex interfacial phenomena like interactions and coalescence and non-Newtonian behaviour of fluids are involved.

 

The present talk gives a synthetic overview of the research activities of our group in this domain, through some typical systems such as gas-liquid (devolatilization, bubble column, foam and fermentation), liquid-liquid (cosmetic creams, detergents), solid-liquid (yogurt, fluidization), gas-solid-liquid (gas migration in cement, biogas nucleation on sludge). Both experimental and theoretical investigation was developed instead of classical global approaches in chemical engineering. By means of the advanced tools: Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), micro-PIV, Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), high speed camera, dynamical tensiometer, rheometers and so on, available in our group, multiphase flows were experimentally investigated from micro-, meso- to macroscale. In parallel, several new concepts were employed to model theoretically and simulate numerically these complex systems: determinist chaos, collective cognition (for example, we measured bubbles’ IQ!), computational fluid dynamics (Fluent, CFX & StarCD), molecular dynamics and lattice Boltzmann, etc. The numerical results were systematically validated by experiments up to now. The ultimate (utopia) goal would be the achievement of a multiscale and hybrid model for multiphase flows ranging from molecules to industrial processes. Some concrete application examples will end the talk to illustrate the success and still important limit of our works.
