Abstract A current breakthrough in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is the emergence of adaptive high-order (order > 2) methods. The leader is the discontinuous Galerkin method, amongst several other methods including the residual distribution, streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (SUPG), multi-domain spectral, spectral volume (SV), spectral difference (SD) and correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) methods. All these methods possess the following properties: k-exactness on arbitrary grids, and compactness, which is especially important for parallel computing on clusters of CPUs and GPUs. In this talk, I will describe several recent developments in discontinuous high-order methods such as the SV, SD and CPR formulations, and highlight the similarities and differences. In addition, the application of high-order methods to compute transitional flow over a SD7003 wing and flow over flapping wings will be presented. The talk will conclude with several remaining challenges in the research on high-order methods.
