Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) technology aims to establish a direct link for transmitting information between the brain and external devices. It has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life for individuals with disability as it offers a natural and rich control interface for assistive devices, including functional electrical stimulators for reanimating paralyzed limbs. The first part of this talk will focus on basic motor system neurophysiology research in non-human primates using intracortical microelectrode recording, specifically motor cortical representation and decoding of hand translation and rotation during reaching movement. There is a common pool of neurons in motor cortex that encode both hand translation and hand rotation, and a neural decoder can extract translation and rotation control signals simultaneously for BCI control. The second part of the talk will focus on human BCI research using electrocorticography (ECoG), which records neuronal ensemble activities with brain surface electrodes. Individual finger movement can be reliably decoded from human motor cortical activity as captured by ECoG. The talk will finish up with the latest work that aims to apply BCI technology to its targeted users, including individuals with tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury. |
