Nuclear Pumped Lasers, NPLs, (or “fission reactor pumped lasers”) use reactor neutrons or fission fragments to excite the laser media. Nuclear pumped lasers have been demonstrated to operate mainly pulsed or steady state over a wavelength range from infra-red and visible regions. Lasers are generated from nuclear reactions with gas and/or vapor media because of the penetration of the charged particles. Direct nuclear-pumped 3He-Ne-H2 laser operating at the 2P1-1S2 Ne transition (= 585.3 nm) that was first experimentally studied at the UIUC is detailed in this paper. Nuclear pumped laser is very suitable to be used for advanced applications such as Strategic Defense Initiative SDI, uranium enrichment, and Laser Ordnance Neutralization System LONS. These applications are outlined in this paper. |
