简介: |
Progress in Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) research using a unique external RF ion source, Illinois Ion Beam Source, (ILLIBS) is described. The ILLIBS research objective is to increase IEC neutron yields along with an improvement in the neutron energy production efficiency. Typical IEC operation is performed above the breakdown IEC gas conditions; however, ILLIBS operation uses voltages-pressures below the normal Paschen breakdown curve. Lower chamber pressure is very important to prevent charge exchange losses and ultimately allow operation in the beam-beam fusion regime.
In conclusion, the use of ILLIBS greatly enhances the reaction efficiency of the IEC, serving as a positive step for higher-powered units. |
