Abstract
Alloys have been discovered, developed and designed over millennia. The advent of multicomponent alloys is a watershed event, made possible by the experiments of J W Yeh and Brian Cantor since the nineties of the previous century. These alloys are made of five to thirteen elements in equal proportions. Many of these alloys give rise to solid solutions with simple fcc or bcc structures. They mark a renaissance in physical metallurgy.Experimental studies of these alloys are challenging, as literally millions of combinations of elements have to be explored.
We illustrate this lecture with two of our major studies. We apply Pettfor structure maps by extending to multicomponent solid solutions. Secondly we describe our experiments linking high-erntropy  alloys to bulk metallic glasses involving early and late transition metals

CV
Srinivasa Ranganathan obtained his PhD from Cambridge University, UK in 1965 under the supervision of Sir Alan Cottrell.. His academic career as an educator and researcher in metallurgy for the past four decades at the Banaras Hindu University and the Indian Institute of Science has been stellar.  His contribution to the atomic configuration at grain boundaries has become a citation classic. His  seminal studies on quasicrystals  include the  discovery of decagonal quasicrystals. His work on the structure of Bulk Metallic Glasses has drawn international attention .He has extended the application of Pettifor structure maps to quasicrystals and metallic glasses. He pointed out a decade ago the promise of high entropy alloys and is considered as  a pioneer investigator along with J W Yeh and Brian Cantor, He is a recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Ministry of Steel and the Electron Microscope Society of India. He is a Fellow of all four Academies of Science and Engineering in India. His international recognitions include Fellowship of the World  Academy of Sciences; RQ 14 Distinguished Fellowship; Honorary International Chair Professor, The National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan  He has served as President of the Indian Institute of Metals
