主讲人简介: 
   Professor Depledge was the founding Director and is currently Chair of the Board of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health.  He has a background in environmental and medical toxicology and has produced more than 380 peer-review scientific papers in leading international journals and books. He has been an expert advisor to the United Nations and World Health Organisation since the early 1990s running several research programmes in Brazil, China, Vietnam and elsewhere. Formerly, he was the Chief Scientist of the Environment Agency of England and Wales and served as a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He is also the former Chairman of the Science Advisory Group on Environment and Climate Change of the European Commission. He has held several honorary professorships at leading universities including Harvard (USA), Imperial College, London, and is currently an honorary visiting professor at Oxford University, University College, London and Chiba University Medical School, Japan. He serves as a member of the UK Governments Hazardous Substances Advisory Committee and Public Health England’s Global Health Committee.
   His research interests include the impact of climate change on health and wellbeing, the effects of chemical body burdens on human health and the environment, using the natural environment to foster health and wellbeing and finding ways of communicating scientific information to policymakers and politicians.
 
讲座简介
   Throughout human evolutionary history we have lived in intimate contact with our local ecosystems. This has involved surviving threats from diverse natural hazards and learning to thrive by manipulating the natural world to acquire resources. Over the last two centuries, however, new ways of thinking have given rise to a vast range of novel technologies that have transformed the ways in which most of us live. A progressive migration away from natural settings now means that over 85% of the UK population reside in urban, built environments, supported through the exploitation of natural resources.
In this lecture some of the interconnections between human activities and global environmental change will be explored and their consequences examined. Particular attention will be paid to the threats posed by climate change, demographic change and emerging chemicals (including pharmaceuticals and nanomaterials). Also, some of the many benefits to health and wellbeing that natural environments can provide will be described. The difficulties of minimising environmental threats and maximising opportunities will be discussed in relation to policy development.
