Dr. Shi holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and directs the Laboratory for Nanoengineering & Drug Delivery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also a research affiliate at Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology. His research involves a highly interdisciplinary combination of nanotechnology, biomaterials, drug delivery, and immunotherapy. He has developed different multifunctional nanoparticle systems for the delivery of small molecules, proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids. The development of immunonanotherapeutics by using targeted polymeric nanoparticles has formed the foundation of one biotechnology company Selecta Biosciences, and resulted in the first-in-human clinical trial of a synthetic nanoparticle vaccine (SEL-068) for smoking cessation. His recent work using hybrid lipid-polymer nanoparticles for nucleic acid delivery has also recently led to the formation of a new biotechnology company Koan Biotherapeutics. Dr. Shi has authored more than 30 papers and is an inventor of over 25 issued and pending patents. He has received the NIH K99/R00 Career Development Award, Movember-PCF Challenge Award, PCF Young Investigator Award, among others. He obtained his BS degree from the Department of Chemistry in Tsinghua University and PhD in Chemistry from Texas A&M University.
